Journal April 24 - May 1, 1962

Jean-Pierre Leroy
April 24 (continued)—Last evening, the Leroys invited us to come eat Jell-O with them, and we didn’t hesitate. How I love that family! You can’t imagine how much good it does me to see the new happiness of these choice spirits, and to share in their family spirit!

April 27—Our whole district (eight missionaries) went into the forest for a two-hour testimony meeting. Very inspiring. I’ll include in this journal a leaf from the tree we sat under.

Sister Leroy still has trouble with her husband. We’ll try to give her some helpful advice.

April 28—A striking and instructive experience: we ran into Sister Leroy and Annick in the street, last evening. We chatted, then they told us that Jean-Pierre (age 7) was impressed to learn that we missionaries arise at six a.m. to do our work. Since then, Jean-Pierre does it, too. Whereas before, Annick had to drag him out of bed at 7:15 to go to school, he’s now washed and dressed before the others get up. When they ask him why, he says, very, very seriously, “The elders get up at six, [130] why shouldn’t I?” If a missionary needs a good reason to get up on time, here it is!
April 29—Again a monthly branch fête, last evening. And among those who came was Marcel Louis, friend of our half-apostate Brother Louis. This afternoon, we had a meeting at his place, in the course of which this brother bore a testimony I hadn’t known he possessed.

Among us also were the Leblanc children (referrals from Sister Bauguin) and some kids from a neighbor family. If we do our job, we’ll see these kids first in the SAM [MIA] and then in the Church.

I’m afraid, though, that we’ve taken on more “programs” than we can implement effectively. This is the first month that I’ve been here without baptizing anybody, and this may be the reason. I begin to be fed up with all the talk, with all the gimmicks that our supervisor uses. He seems to think that he’s supposed to supervise everything all the time. Sometimes it appears that we spend half of our time in meetings, listening to thousands of repetitions of the same clichés, aimed of course at pushing us to work harder. But the result is generally in the other direction.
May 1—It’s really something when we quit talking and start working. Several beautiful things happened today:

The holiday [Mayday/Labor Day, a big deal, hereabouts] kept us from our usual tracting. So, we spent the morning organizing the branch genealogical committee, consisting of Brother Valton and Sister Philbois.
