Journal April 17, 1962
April 17 (continued)—I’ve started a program that will help me become a good missionary, I hope. A week ago Sunday, Elder Bennion (the big cheese) had us listen to a recording called “Earl Nightingale Gives You the Strangest Secret in the World.” He’s one of those power-of-positive-thinking preachers. I’ve adopted his approach by promising myself to memorize all the missionary lessons before May 11. Up to now, I’ve added one whole lesson to my repertory. It’s a good approach to self-improvement, I’m sure. And I need it, big-time.

This morning, we had a sadly interesting experience: one of our investigators admitted almost that she’s living in adultery. She started by insisting that we show her a sign, and then she talked about the troubles she has because of her husband, and how much a woman needs to be loved, and how the men one meets are always kinder than one’s own spouse… Can somebody point me to the page in the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith or in the Discourses of Brigham Young or one of the prophets explains how one who wants a sign is in fact an adulterer. I’ve seen it, but I’ve mislaid the reference.

This afternoon, we played baseball with the Cleunay kids. About thirty took part, and it was a satisfying success. While we played. Josette gathered a big handful of paquerettes and gave them to me after the game. Yup: it’s decided: the day they restore polygamy, I’m coming back here to add Josette and Nelly to my harem!
