Journal March 2-15, 1962

March 2—I find it strangely refreshing to work hard, rather than casually. But under this new order, I find it harder to get to my accustomed Scripture study. Haven’t even finished the Doctrines et Alliances.

We were tracting the other day in the rue Brocéliande. The map of Rennes and that of Europe make me aware that we have proselytized in the westernmost place in Europe where Mormon missionaries are now assigned. At our conference on Monday, President Hinckley said, “Go west, young man; go west!” Maybe we’ll get to do exactly that. I’d love to work in Brest or Quimper.

In this year (1962) the Republic of France issued this stamp, picturing the Palais de Justice at Rennes.

March 4Sister Bauguin had some sort of attack during Testimony Meeting and is still pretty sick. We went to her place this evening to administer to her; I anointed, then Elder Bennion sealed the anointing, with Elders Robins, Crockett, and me, assisting.

March 7—An unbelievable day, today. At 10 a.m., Elder Robins and I went to the Palais de Justice to ask M. Laigo, the juge d’instruction, for permission to go the the departmental prison to visit an Arab who had asked us to come see him. He said OK, and so we were headed home when a woman suddenly pulled her car out of its parking place and hit us on the left side. We escaped with a few bruises

After lunch, we went to the prison at 56, blvd Jacques Cartier, where we spoke for a few moments with M. Slimane Ben Terkia. He said he found a purse in the street and took it to the police. But something was missing, and they accused him of taking it. Now he wants to clear himself. We gave him such encouragement as we could and left him several tracts, which he’ll have plenty of time to read. On our way out of the prison, we passed five young, unhappy-looking Arabs, guarded by several policemen. We didn’t know what it was all about.

Then we went to Maurepas to look up some referrals. On our way back, we stopped to look at a city map when two men approached us and asked where they might find the Mormons! They’d heard about us and wanted to read the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. We sold them a Book of Mormon, and they said they’d come see us in two or three weeks, when they’d be in Rennes again.

Then we went to Cleunay to speak with a nice family; they told us that this afternoon the police had arrested five terrorist bombers of the O.A.S. who had come to blow up the Palais de Justice, the Prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine, the City Hall, the Palais de Commerce, and the train station. We suppose those are the five we saw.

Finally, we returned home to share hamburgers with a neighbor family that Elder Bennion had invited. Then, to bed.

March 15—The missionary spirit is everywhere–it’s really something. We’re really just starting to use this grand missionary tool called group teaching, having held two big meetings this week for the investigators of all the missionaries.
