Journal November 23 - 25, 1961
[I no longer recall why I relapsed briefly into English at this point. May have been at the request of somebody who didn’t do French…]

A short description of my first companion: Elder William Erwin Higley of Farr West, Utah, is known to our zone supervisors as “William the Baptist” because he is a real baptizing Elder and a spiritual giant, though he stands only five feet three or four inches tall. Unmanageable sandy hair, a square jaw, and glasses are characteristic of him. A drama student before he came into the mission field, he has a fine stage voice when he cares to use it, and he understands French very well, although he speaks it with an accent on which one could dull a timber saw. He is very easy to get along with, largely because he rarely says anything and never hurries.

Besides his spirituality he presents a true example of humility. I’ll always be grateful for the lessons in real missionary spirit he is providing me. He’s a swell chap, and it’s a pleasure to be his companion.
