…and Yet Later
Since I didn’t recognize any of these handsome young people, I’d identified them tentatively as a group of Mammy’s Institute kids. Yes, never content with merely finite challenges, Mammy was also central to the effort to create the LDS Institute of Religion and the Lambda Delta Sigma1 organization to serve the students of San Bernardino Valley College, where she and Pappy taught. Since my college life unfolded outside the Inland Empire, I was never part of this activity. But Valerie was the first Institute Secretary there, and when she didn’t recognize them either, we were mystified.

Since assembling this page in September, 2006, however, I’ve shared the photo with Walt Terry’s “Saints of San Bernardino” website, where knowledgeable folks have recognized here a Second Ward Seminary group, including Marsha Stockton Rockwell (long, red hair -- later a successor to Valerie as Institute Secretary); Karen Wilcox; Marlene Wardle Mosher; Kenny Mower; Randy Whitlock; Cathy Anderson; and others. Guess Mammy must have taught Seminary up in the Waterman building, at one time. If I knew, I’d forgotten…
1Pappy, of course, would refer to it, lovingly, as ‘Lambda Delta Stigma.”
