Pioneer Day, 1947
That’s Brent, going on two, down front; I’m standing, next-to-right, aged six.

Pioneer Day was a big deal for us San Bernardino Latter-day Saints, each year. Sometimes we even celebrated the rather significant role of San Bernardino in the early Mormon settlement of the West. Mostly, though, we just commemorated, around July 24, our Uncle Brigham Young’s “This Is The Place” entry into the Salt Lake Valley. Hence the transformation of every kid’s Radio Flyer into a passable imitation of a covered wagon.

We’ve agonized a bit over the exact date of this shot, but our best guess is Saturday, 26 July, 1947: just two days after Brigham’s actual centennial. Our annual San Bernardino Stake picnic took place at Lytle Creek Park. My most treasured recollections involve corn dogs (yum!) and “Dunk-the-Bishop” booths. They don’t suffice to identify our three solemn-looking companions.
