Didn’t take them that long. The inventory, presented on 3 May, added up to $2,759.82. Most of which ($1,920.00) reflected the appreciated value of Daniel’s homestead. Wonder what part of that property was the parcel he had bought from Kingsbury, 36 years earlier, for ten pounds ten… Other items ranged from a yoke of oxen worth $55.00 to a pair of mittens valued at 17ยข. The court put Mr. Norton in charge of selling the whole at auction.

So, after whatever unchronicled struggles and trials may have been his lot, Grandpa Daniel Hurd of Sandisfield, Massachusetts, appears to have died both intestate and insolvent. And so I still don’t know what moved step-Grandma Freelove to desire to be remembered as the Widow Hurd during the last quarter-century of her life. A gold-digger’s lust surely wouldn’t seem to explain it.

Grandma Amanda Hurd Stillman now leads us down the pedigree ladder one more generation.
