These particularly fine family group portraits appear to date from Christmas, 1956, when the Utah contingent came to San Bernardino. Scott (in Ruth’s arms) looks like the two-year-old he was that year; (Ruth’s) Jim, another fine photographer in the family, probably took the big group shot.

Grandpa and Grandma grew up in a time when folks seldom faced the camera, and when they did, they’d wear a dignified dead-pan. Perhaps because one had to hold still for rather a long time.
In this life, they never did come to terms with the idea of smiling photos. For my money, the smiles in these pictures don’t disfigure their wearers. Particularly Leola.

The clothes confirm that we took these shots on the same occasion. Probably right after church.
