It doesn’t snow in San Bernardino. But it did snow, in 1956. Leola felt some anxiety about the crop we were expecting from the lemon tree in the northeast corner of our little property. Turns out the lemons were unfazed. A bit sweeter than usual, if anything. This corner became an important photo site.

’Twouldn’t be accurate to say that Brent supplanted Verna as Leola’s preferred partner in portraiture: Verna was still with us, albeit some distance away. But Brent (we called him, affectionately, “Bwum,” for no obvious reason) was clearly our most photogenic family member, and we have several shots of the two of them.
