Ministry Gatherings

Well, under President Nelson’s new order of things, the assignment is no longer organized specifically around a monthly home visit, but we’re encouraged to follow the Spirit and make such contacts and render such services as our designated families may need to satisfy their spiritual and material needs: no more do we become “100% home teachers” simply by reporting consistent monthly visits.

Since we’ve been in Utah, it’s been my privilege to do most of my home teaching with Bob Whitney, whom I’ve mentioned before, and we’ve become good friends. Nowadays, we’re still companions as “ministering brethren,” assigned to shepherd two households of empty nesters, sorta like ourselves.

As you might suppose, the new arrangement calls for more creativity than did the old, and I took the liberty to organize quarterly supper gatherings of the four couples involved in the assignment that Bob and I share. The Andersons hosted the first one, on March 27 (yes, we just barely made it under the first-quarter wire); Bob the second; the Stephensons (next door) the third; and the Lucases (a block away) the fourth. Writing in 2020, I can report that all four sessions took place, and we begin the new year with the intention of continuing the pattern.
