Appendix: Plessis-lez-Tours |
That’s me, down by the fountain in the courtyard of this small, homely château, just a few miles1 west of Tours, where I was serving in 1964. My companion and I (I forget which one) came on our Lambretta.
Turns out the place has rather more history than you might guess from its appearance. Louis XI, it seems, lived here much of his life, and some of the most hair-raising events of his reign (1461-83) took place in the vicinity. Later, in 1580, the Treaty of Plessis-les-Tours was signed here, making François, Duke of Anjou2 sovereign (for a couple of years) of the Dutch Republic. Never did bring Pappy here, although we were in Tours several times. It made a nice D-Day visit, although nobody offered us a tour, or anything. 1“lez” means “near.” 2A relative, perhaps? |
