France boasts tons of picturesque places; few more so than La Rochelle. They say that a huge chain used to extend across the harbor entrance from one of these famous towers to the other. It’s easy to see how customs officers and military people could favor such a device, but I have a hard time imagining that they could quickly or easily change it from open to closed, or vice versa. But then mariners are used to waiting for locks, repairs, and whatnot… |
