Appendix: Fougères

Nobody seemed to care that we transient aliens got a kick out of clambering on the impressive 15th-century walls. At left, I’m with Valerie, and below, on another trip, with Elder Dane McBride.

Am I the only one impressed by the ability of Pappy’s (perhaps inadvertent) silhouette technique to capture identifiable images of people? If you know Dane and me, you’ll pick us out instantly.

Another impressive view of the château de Fougères.

The name, by the way, means "ferns" in French, but we didn’t see any. I think that’s what philologists call a faux ami—a tempting but spurious correspondence. The Bretons (whose castle this was, after all) called it Felger.
