Appendix: Cherbourg
We visited Cherbourg in Normandy at least once, dining at the Intercontinental on the waterfront and enjoying particularly “la marmite Cherbourgoise” a multiple-seafood cream chowder that perfectly exemplified the butter-based cuisine that I loved but that gets the region low marks among the cognoscenti, even including Waverley Root.
Appendix: Chinon
Neither memory nor photographic evidence indicates that we made it to Chinon in 1967-69. Strange, if not, inasmuch as it had impressed me so strongly in 1964. But it would be only decades later that I’d learn of our family connection to the Coeur de Lion, and our gustatory desires no longer drew us toward the air-base PX (with its burgers and shakes). Indeed, I think de Gaulle had by then already kicked our military out of France.
