Meanwhile, back at the Mission Home

Visiting Elder Boyd K Packer and me, in front of The Board
Elder Packer completed his term as New England Mission President, soon after breaking the accident news to me and then helping us very kindly through the ensuing transitions. He then returned to Salt Lake to take up his responsibilities as a General Authority, and it was in that capacity that we saw him more than once in Paris. At least my eyes are open for this one…

These days (mid-2011), he’s President of the Twelve and, if President Monson were to die, he’d become President of the Church. We pray for him: we hear he’s dealing with substantial health problems.
The Garlic Kerfuffle—Not to make too much of the fun we had, outranking Presidential Assistant Mitt Romney in some respects, but we must confess to a bit of demure glee on the subject. Under Pappy’s direction, he was very much in charge of the missionaries and had fully proved his worth in that rôle, especially between the accident and our arrival: see Pappy’s favorite anecdote in another sidebar.

But it turned out that our very fine Spanish chef, one Pardo, shared his countrymen’s love of garlic, and ours. Mitt, quite emphatically, differed. Mitt may tell you that he prevailed to the extent of reducing the sheer volume of garlic in the Home’s daily cuisine, but we’re here to tell you that Pardo responded gladly to our support, in this respect. Fair to add that Pappy leaned to our side of this minor controversy.
