Appendix: Versailles
Bataille de Yorktown by Auguste Couder
in the Galerie des Batailles of the Musée national du Château de Versailles
This painting caught our American eyes, of course. It’s dated 1836, in the middle of the “July monarchy” of erstwhile Boston resident, then King of the French Louis Philippe. The ancien régime did regard Yorktown, with some reason, as a French victory.
