Chinon

I was also aware that it was here that Joan of Arc finally chased down the Dauphin Charles, confronting him on the paving-stones of the great hall. We walked, reverentially, on those stones. In case you can’t read the plaque they put up on the 500th anniversary, here it is, a little bigger (pax Harold Ross):

“1429         1929
JEANNE D’ARC
RECONNUT CHARLES VII DANS
CETTE SALLE 6 MARS 1429
     CINQUIEME CENTENAIRE”

Or, for any “anglophones bornés” among you:

“1429         1929
JOAN OF ARC
RECOGNIZED CHARLES VII IN
THIS ROOM 6 MARCH 1429
     FIFTH CENTENARY”

In case anybody still didn’t get it, this sign was also nearby:

“IN THIS ROOM
THE 5th AND 6th OF MARCH, 1429
JOAN OF ARC
CAME TO URGE
CHARLES VII
TO GO TO REIMS
TO BE CROWNED
KING OF FRANCE”
