The Missionary Department sent these instructions to guide our preparations. It’ll violate nobody’s preconceptions that our distaff counterparts (“Lady Missionaries”) faced a longer list (crossed out here) of items to fit into their 20-kilogram baggage allowance.
Perhaps the most amusing item in the list is the famous missionary hat. I don’t recall purchasing one: by the time I got to France, the rule had changed, and we didn’t have to wear ’em. To my vast relief. Also don’t remember ever wearing either of the required sweaters, although I did dutifully buy them and carried them from one apartment to another in my luggage. Never did own a bicycle or a typewriter in France. Purchased (new) a cranky little motorbike called a Mobylette. Then sold it some months later, when the Church went to Lambretta motor-scooters. Brought a 35-mm slide camera that the folks had given me. Never was much of a photographer, though. |
