Ralph Kirkpatrick
I told you that MIT offered (and still does) a plethora of fine cultural experiences. Then I reported on several rather offbeat examples. Here are a few of the more conventional (but no less marvelous) sort.

In a community (greater Boston) that’s notoriously saturated with culture, MIT’s Humanities Series stands out as one of the most distinguished clusters. This concert, for example, in the winter of my junior year, brought Ralph Kirkpatrick and his harpsichord to Kresge Auditorium.

This was my first experience of live, world-class harpsichord performance. When Kirkpatrick came out and took his “Thanks for welcoming me here” bow, I remember remarking upon his very long arms and fingers. To my embarrassment, the first descriptive term that crossed my mind was “simian.” And then those long fingers started to caress the keyboard, and I was even more distressed to have entertained such an incongruous impression.
