Seminary Breakfast
The custom was already in place, I think, when I joined Mammy’s class as a junior. Note, please, that it’s dark outside. This was morning darkness, not the gloom of night. I do feel an obligation to record the Seminary Breakfast as a phenomenon that reveals something about my Mammy’s amazing teaching and leadership skills.

So Coach Mammy proposed, I’m told, by way of autotelic celebration, a breakfast gathering on East Sixteenth Street, in place of a 6:00 a.m. instructional session at the church. And she asked what they’d like to have for breakfast. They say she was unfazed when tacos and root beer became the unanimous and eventually traditional bill of fare. Behold, in front of my friend Don, two of Mammy’s marvelous tacos, made with Julia’s hand-made tortillas.

This gang, you understand, was thoroughly accustomed to getting up early and doing important things while their fellows slumbered. And they were proud of it. And they carried a delightful and remarkable can-do spirit with them to Pacific High that made them successful and influential there, well beyond numerical expectation.

At left, a more conventional gathering: observe the clothes and what looks like maybe cake and ice cream. Same place, same kids.
