Vern Hansen |
In the groundbreaking ceremony, San Bernardino Stake President Levern M (“Uncle Vern, to you kids”) Hansen showed a vigorous style as he led our singing. He was a lovely man, a career Scout executive, and (as far as my youthful perceptions gave me to discern) an effective Church leader. By this time, I believe, Pappy was serving as his counselor.
By the time I left on my first mission to France in 1961, he and his Elsie had retired to Huntington Beach, if I recall correctly. But they were kind enough to return for my farewell (we used to do those up pretty elaborately), where he sang “The Holy City,” something of a trademark solo. |
