Del at the Fireplace
Our little nuclear family on East Sixteenth seldom consisted of just the four of us. Involved as they were in Church and community youth programs, the folks welcomed an interesting diversity of visitors to our hearth, and some of them1 stayed a while.

Here’s my sorta-foster-brother Del Riddle in his Key Club jacket. He was Governor of the club’s California-Nevada-Hawaii District in his senior year (1955-6). A good speaker, he used to go around telling audiences that “Key Club is a Way of Life.”

Del was drum major for our Pacific High School marching band and came in for some honors as a bassoon player. Del stayed with us mainly because his parents objected to his interest in the Church.
Here (left) he is with Joe Baker on the day that Joe came to San Bernardino to baptize him. They were friends before we knew either one.

Graduation Day came for Del while he was part of our family. So, of course, he rated an honorific and commemorative hearth portrait.

1Mostly young; mostly with troubles of one kind or another; I wasn’t always in on the details.
