And here, we look back the other way, eastward toward
“Scotland” and Woburn. The land on the north side of the road, also within the Russell grant, has largely reverted to trees. On the south, modest homes line the main drag, with more recent (and more pricey) housing developments replacing the former plowed fields behind them. All of it would have been plowed, of course, just as soon as the owners could get it cleared. Forest was commonly called “waste land” and treated as such.
