back Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122 - 1204) next
  • Women in World History —At the age of 15, 26GGM Eleanor married Louis VII of France. Over his objections, she led an army of women in the Second Crusade.

  • At age 30, she married Henry Fitz-Empress, who would become Henry II, the first Plantagenet king of England….

  • Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings, by Amy Kelly. Harvard University Press (Cambridge:1950). A wonderful read. Please relish the story of Grandma Eleanor writing a bullying letter to the Pope in 1192, referring to herself as “Eleanor, by the wrath of God Queen of England…”

I got this portrait from Medieval History; they acknowledge Queens of England, published 1904, as their public-domain source. They note also that there are no known contemporary portraits of Eleanor.
