Kresge Auditorium
Kresge Auditorium, quite new in my day (built 1955), located maybe a hundred meters west of Mass Ave and the Main Entrance.
We gathered here for everything from twenty-five-cent Friday-night (or were they Saturday?) LSC (Lecture Series Committee) movies, featuring multiple Roadrunner cartoons, to Ravi Shankar, Revels, e. e. cummings, Barry Goldwater, the Budapest String Quartet, and MIT Concert Band rehearsals and performances.
We heard a good deal back then, naturally enough, about the engineering wonder that is Kresge. Its roof is a spherical triangle of concrete, poured (if I recall correctly) all at one session, and tapering from a couple of feet thick at each apex to some gossamer thinness at the top. Never verified the bit about the top, but here’s one corner, resting on a concrete pier and attached by impressive bolts.
